Statement in response to Vagrancy Act being removed

YMCA South Midlands welcomes the removal of the Vagrancy Act – a law that has punished people simply for being homeless for far too long.

Being homeless is not a crime. No young person should be treated like a criminal just because they do not have a place to call home. Behind every situation is a real story – family breakdown, mental health challenges, or the rising cost of living.

This is not a small issue. Recent research from the homelessness charity Shelter shows that around 2,700 people in Milton Keynes are experiencing insecure housing – roughly 1 in every 113 residents – making it one of the highest rates in England.

This change matters.  The Government has also set out plans to end homelessness, including an investment of £3.5 billion over three years to help prevent homelessness and reduce rough sleeping. However, real change will depend on how effectively this support reaches the communities and young people who need it most.

Let’s be clear – this is not the finish line. Young people still need access to housing, the right support and real opportunities.

At YMCA South Midlands, we are proud to stand alongside young people as they grow in confidence and take control of their futures. It is time to move beyond criminalisation and focus on solutions that genuinely make a difference. YMCA South Midlands is part of this solution.
