In September, residents and staff from our Northamptonshire Campus took part in a three-day residential trip to Swanage, designed to build on their independence, resilience, and strong relationships through shared experiences and personal challenges.
Despite a lively start involving hail, heavy rain, and unexpected delays, residents demonstrated adaptability and teamwork from the outset. Spirits lifted on the chain ferry crossing, with group singalongs creating a sense of connection and belonging that set a positive tone for the trip.
Time away from campus allowed residents to recognise their capabilities in making choices, exploring new environments, and managing everyday tasks with growing confidence. A relaxed seaside walk and shared fish and chips gave space for conversation, reflection, and enjoyment — supporting both emotional wellbeing and social connection.
Day two focused on a personal and group challenge: completing an eight-mile coastal walk. Every resident rose to the challenge, strengthening their belief in their own abilities and gaining a powerful sense of achievement. Recognising success in this way supports motivation, confidence, and resilience — all key foundations for positive mental health and resilience.
Evenings offered valuable downtime, including a beach quiz and homemade pizzas, reinforcing positive relationships and a sense of safety, and belonging.
On the final day, residents chose how to spend their time, whether crabbing, exploring the town, or enjoying the seafront, further supporting autonomy and self-expression.
The calm, quiet journey home reflected just how full, rewarding, and meaningful the experience had been.
